Complete Your PhD Studies

There are lots of people with lots of enthusiasm start off on their PhD studies; PhD in various fields and areas of their own specialization. How many of them really complete the work that they have undertaken? Not that it is difficult to get, PhD studies requires consistency and commitment. Research is a little harsh as usual. For instance, when everything goes fine you will get your results in expected lines and Research could turn out to be a motivating packet of information. But this is something that never happens. That is possibly the reason why PhD studies could get completed anywhere between 2 and 5 years!

What are the major issues in doing your PhD studies?

Here are the issues:

1. PhD studies requires you to study, research open and come out with a clear picture of something that was hazier early on. But then it is not always possible for you to come up with something new over there. That could cause delay in submitting your report. When you started you 'thought' all the moves that you are making will go positive and your PhD studies will open the Pandora's Box. But that is not the case with the research exercise normally. You might end up opening nothing but a beer can!

2. The second issue is one of funding. There are research projects where PhD studies are hinged on, which could get withdrawn by the government or by the agency that was supporting it till then. Of course, it is awful. But the priorities might have changed and the agency might have felt there is no need for the specific research in progress. There go your PhD studies and the financial support you had.

3. Third issue that is faced normally by the students is not external to the students and scholars but internal to them. This happens when the student loses interest in his PhD studies. This happens when the topic he choose just did not amuse him or her any more. Or he fell into a different company who could brainwash the research person to believe that the topic he has chosen is not worth the efforts and he might not complete his PhD studies successfully, if he pursued this.

There are a number of other issues, including the guide and the institution. But then these are all minor compared to the above three which I consider as the major problem in your world of PhD studies.

How do you get over these issues? Many people think that PhD studies with all its inherent problems can be solved by a 'lucky break' or a cooperating guide. Neither of them is true. A lucky break has never occurred to a PhD researcher simply because there are too many factors. There has always been only one major factor for this to work. It is WORK. And consistent work!
